Singapore Masters Winners
Golfing superstar, Fijian-born Vijay Singh, was inaugural Singapore Masters winner in 2001, when the tournament was hosted on the Bukit Course at Singapore Island Country Club. The Singapore Masters tournament is co-sanctioned by the European Tour and the Asian Tour and is one of many of the European Tour events that was established in East Asia in the early 1990s.
Arjun Atwal from India was the triumphant Singapore Masters winner in 2002 when the tournament was moved to its current home at the Laguna National Golf & Country Club. China’s Zhang Lian-Wei then beat Ernie Els to the title on the final hole in 2003 in what must be the most exciting end to the tournament in its short but illustrious history.
In more recent Singapore Masters history, Scottish favourite Colin Montgomerie took home the trophy in 2004 before Englishman Nick Dougherty became the youngest champion, winning the 2005 Singapore Masters trophy at the tender age of just 22..
The 2006 event saw the most popular winner in the tournament’s history defeat the odds to claim the Singapore Masters trophy. Local hero, Singaporean Mardan Mamat, made history with his thrilling victory by becoming the first Singaporean to win an event on the European Tour.
In 2007 Liang Wen-chong became only the second Chinese golfer to win on the European Tour. In a tense finale, he defeated Malaysia’s Iain Steel at the first hole of a sudden death play-off to claim the Clariden Leu Singapore Masters at the Laguna National Golf & Country Club.
