Liang Wen-chong defeated both the odds and the chasing pack to become only the second Chinese golfer in history to win on the European Tour. He triumphed over Malaysia’s Iain Steel at the first hole of a sudden death play-off to lift the Clariden Leu Singapore Masters trophy at the Laguna National Golf Club. In an amazing coincidence, the win occurred on the same course where Zhang-Lian-Wei became the first Chinese golfer to hoist aloft a European Tour Trophy in 2003.

Liang and Steel, both of whom are affiliate members of the European Tour, ended the 2007 Singapore Masters on 11 under par 277 after their respective final rounds of 73 and 71. Englishman Simon Dyson was one shot adrift in third place. Liang then held his nerve to take the spoils with a regulation par four on the first play-off hole after Iain Steel’s drive disappeared into the water hazard to the left of the fairway on the eighteenth hole.

Against the Odds

The final afternoon of the four-day Singapore Masters golf tournament was plagued with bogeys and double bogeys, yet Liang and Steel managed to forge their way around the course without too much hassle. Apart from a double bogey seven at the fifteenth hole, Liang played an immaculate final round.

“I’m very happy,” exclaimed the 2007 Singapore Masters title holderafter receiving his trophy and his cheque. “This is a great tournament and I feel like it’s a good start. I think the key for me was not giving up after playing 15. I think it was that mindset that helped me win. I felt the most pressure on the 17th hole. On the 15th hole, when I saw the leaders at 13-under, I thought my chances were slim but I didn’t give up,” he said.

After fighting his way back into contention, Liang managed to hold his nerve while those around him faltered and ended the day with a smile on his face and his first Asian Tour title.

Liang Wen-chong, 2007 Singapore Masters title holder, may be able to repeat his performance at this year’s event.
